200,000 years ago, during the ice age, "moraines" appeared on the Veluwe. The sandbars you can spot along the former Zuyder Zee here and there, are the remnants of the moraines. "De Horsterhoeve" owes its existence to one of these sandbars. In the old days, the population would come here to harvest turf. The turf sods were used to build shelters, the sod huts. The heather was removed with a special tool: the sod cutter.

Slowly, the high sandbars disappeared from the landscape. The ancient custom is no longer practised in this modern age. Only the antique sod cutter in our "Hoeve" and the name "De Plaggenhut" on our kiosk now remind of this period.

In the vicinity of the "Horst" area and close to "Strand Horst", the name "De Horsterhoeve" is very suitable and says a lot about the environment our park is in.

Strand Horst - Windsurfing in the Veluwe
Strand Horst is the best windsurfing spot in the Netherlands, and is about 2 km from the campsite. Its favourable location and the shallow water in the splendid lake mean that windsurfing is practised here almost all year round. You can hire boards and take lessons at Telstar on the beach. Swimmers and sun worshippers have a multitude of sandy beaches to choose from. Boating enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the marina. The beach kiosks, Partycentrum Strand Horst, Bellini's pizza & pasta and McDonald's all offer snacks, drinks and a warm welcome. There's always something going on at Strand Horst!

Pitch&Putt Golf Strand Horst
Pitch&Putt Golf is an affordable and accessible sport, played on a small 18-hole course. It is suitable for experienced golfers as well as people who have never played golf before. Everyone is able to play golf on their own after brief instruction. The minimum age is 8 years old and the playing equipment is included in the price.
